2 CHRONICLES 34 3 FOR in the eighth year of his reign, while he was yet young, he began to seek after the GOD of David his father: and in the twelfth year he began to purge Judah and Jerusalem from the high places, and the groves, and the carved images, and the molten images. 8 Now in the eighteenth year of his reign, when he had purged the land, and the house, he sent Shaphan the son of Azaliah, and Maaseiah the governor of the city, and Joah the son of Joahaz the recorder, to repair the house of the LORD his GOD. 9 And when they came to Hilkiah the high priest, they delivered the money that was brought into the house of GOD, which the Levites that kept the doors had gathered of the hand of Manasseh and Ephraim, and of all the remnant of Israel, and of all Judah and Benjamin; and they returned to Jerusalem. 11 Even to the artificers and builders gave they it, to buy hewn stone, and timber FOR couplings, and to floor the houses which the kings of Judah had destroyed. 21 Go, enquire of the LORD FOR me, and FOR them that are left in Israel and in Judah, concerning the words of the book that is found: FOR great is the wrath of the LORD that is poured out upon us, because our fathers have not kept the word of the LORD, to do after all that is written in this book. 23 And she answered them, Thus saith the LORD GOD of Israel, Tell ye the man that sent you to me, 26 And as FOR the king of Judah, who sent you to enquire of the LORD, so shall ye say unto him, Thus saith the LORD GOD of Israel concerning the words which thou hast heard; 27 Because thine heart was tender, and thou didst humble thyself before GOD, when thou heardest his words against this place, and against the inhabitants thereof, and humbledst thyself before me, and didst rend thy clothes, and weep before me; I have even heard thee also, saith the LORD. 32 And he caused all that were present in Jerusalem and Benjamin to stand to it. And the inhabitants of Jerusalem did according to the covenant of GOD, the GOD of their fathers. 33 And Josiah took away all the abominations out of all the countries that pertained to the children of Israel, and made all that were present in Israel to serve, even to serve the LORD their GOD. And all his days they departed not from following the LORD, the GOD of their fathers. 2 CHRONICLES 35 3 And said unto the Levites that taught all Israel, which were holy unto the LORD, Put the holy ark in the house which Solomon the son of David king of Israel did build; it shall not be a burden upon your shoulders: serve now the LORD your GOD, and his people Israel, 7 And Josiah gave to the people, of the flock, lambs and kids, all FOR the passover offerings, FOR all that were present, to the number of thirty thousand, and three thousand bullocks: these were of the king's substance. 8 And his princes gave willingly unto the people, to the priests, and to the Levites: Hilkiah and Zechariah and Jehiel, rulers of the house of GOD, gave unto the priests FOR the passover offerings two thousand and six hundred small cattle and three hundred oxen. 9 Conaniah also, and Shemaiah and Nethaneel, his brethren, and Hashabiah and Jeiel and Jozabad, chief of the Levites, gave unto the Levites FOR passover offerings five thousand small cattle, and five hundred oxen. 14 And afterward they made ready FOR themselves, and FOR the priests: because the priests the sons of Aaron were busied in offering of burnt offerings and the fat until night; therefore the Levites prepared FOR themselves, and FOR the priests the sons of Aaron. 15 And the singers the sons of Asaph were in their place, according to the commandment of David, and Asaph, and Heman, and Jeduthun the king's seer; and the porters waited at every gate; they might not depart from their service; FOR their brethren the Levites prepared FOR them. 21 But he sent ambassadors to him, saying, What have I to do with thee, thou king of Judah? I come not against thee this day, but against the house wherewith I have war: FOR GOD commanded me to make haste: forbear thee from meddling with GOD, who is with me, that he destroy thee not. 22 Nevertheless Josiah would not turn his face from him, but disguised himself, that he might fight with him, and hearkened not unto the words of Necho from the mouth of GOD, and came to fight in the valley of Megiddo. 23 And the archers shot at king Josiah; and the king said to his servants, Have me away; FOR I am sore wounded. 24 His servants therefore took him out of that chariot, and put him in the second chariot that he had; and they brought him to Jerusalem, and he died, and was buried in one of the sepulchres of his fathers. And all Judah and Jerusalem mourned FOR Josiah. 25 And Jeremiah lamented FOR Josiah: and all the singing men and the singing women spake of Josiah in their lamentations to this day, and made them an ordinance in Israel: and, behold, they are written in the lamentations. 2 CHRONICLES 36 5 Jehoiakim was twenty and five years old when he began to reign, and he reigned eleven years in Jerusalem: and he did that which was evil in the sight of the LORD his GOD. 12 And he did that which was evil in the sight of the LORD his GOD, and humbled not himself before Jeremiah the prophet speaking from the mouth of the LORD. 13 And he also rebelled against king Nebuchadnezzar, who had made him swear by GOD: but he stiffened his neck, and hardened his heart from turning unto the LORD GOD of Israel. 15 And the LORD GOD of their fathers sent to them by his messengers, rising up betimes, and sending; because he had compassion on his people, and on his dwelling place: 16 But they mocked the messengers of GOD, and despised his words, and misused his prophets, until the wrath of the LORD arose against his people, till there was no remedy. 17 Therefore he brought upon them the king of the Chaldees, who slew their young men with the sword in the house of their sanctuary, and had no compassion upon young man or maiden, old man, or him that stooped FOR age: he gave them all into his hand. 18 And all the vessels of the house of GOD, great and small, and the treasures of the house of the LORD, and the treasures of the king, and of his princes; all these he brought to Babylon. 19 And they burnt the house of GOD, and brake down the wall of Jerusalem, and burnt all the palaces thereof with fire, and destroyed all the goodly vessels thereof. 21 To fulfil the word of the LORD by the mouth of Jeremiah, until the land had enjoyed her sabbaths: FOR as long as she lay desolate she kept sabbath, to fulfil threescore and ten years. 23 Thus saith Cyrus king of Persia, All the kingdoms of the earth hath the LORD GOD of heaven given me; and he hath charged me to build him an house in Jerusalem, which is in Judah. Who is there among you of all his people? The LORD his GOD be with him, and let him go up. EZRA 1 2 Thus saith Cyrus king of Persia, The LORD GOD of heaven hath given me all the kingdoms of the earth; and he hath charged me to build him an house at Jerusalem, which is in Judah. 3 Who is there among you of all his people? his GOD be with him, and let him go up to Jerusalem, which is in Judah, and build the house of the LORD GOD of Israel, (he is the GOD,) which is in Jerusalem. 4 And whosoever remaineth in any place where he sojourneth, let the men of his place help him with silver, and with gold, and with goods, and with beasts, beside the freewill offering FOR the house of GOD that is in Jerusalem. 5 Then rose up the chief of the fathers of Judah and Benjamin, and the priests, and the Levites, with all them whose spirit GOD had raised, to go up to build the house of the LORD which is in Jerusalem. EZRA 2 68 And some of the chief of the fathers, when they came to the house of the LORD which is at Jerusalem, offered freely FOR the house of GOD to set it up in his place: EZRA 3 2 Then stood up Jeshua the son of Jozadak, and his brethren the priests, and Zerubbabel the son of Shealtiel, and his brethren, and builded the altar of the GOD of Israel, to offer burnt offerings thereon, as it is written in the law of Moses the man of GOD. 3 And they set the altar upon his bases; FOR fear was upon them because of the people of those countries: and they offered burnt offerings thereon unto the LORD, even burnt offerings morning and evening. 8 Now in the second year of their coming unto the house of GOD at Jerusalem, in the second month, began Zerubbabel the son of Shealtiel, and Jeshua the son of Jozadak, and the remnant of their brethren the priests and the Levites, and all they that were come out of the captivity unto Jerusalem; and appointed the Levites, from twenty years old and upward, to set forward the work of the house of the LORD. 9 Then stood Jeshua with his sons and his brethren, Kadmiel and his sons, the sons of Judah, together, to set forward the workmen in the house of GOD: the sons of Henadad, with their sons and their brethren the Levites. 11 And they sang together by course in praising and giving thanks unto the LORD; because he is good, FOR his mercy endureth FOR ever toward Israel. And all the people shouted with a great shout, when they praised the LORD, because the foundation of the house of the LORD was laid. 12 But many of the priests and Levites and chief of the fathers, who were ancient men, that had seen the first house, when the foundation of this house was laid before their eyes, wept with a loud voice; and many shouted aloud FOR joy: 13 So that the people could not discern the noise of the shout of joy from the noise of the weeping of the people: FOR the people shouted with a loud shout, and the noise was heard afar off. EZRA 4 1 Now when the adversaries of Judah and Benjamin heard that the children of the captivity builded the temple unto the LORD GOD of Israel; 2 Then they came to Zerubbabel, and to the chief of the fathers, and said unto them, Let us build with you: FOR we seek your GOD, as ye do; and we do sacrifice unto him since the days of Esarhaddon king of Assur, which brought us up hither. 3 But Zerubbabel, and Jeshua, and the rest of the chief of the fathers of Israel, said unto them, Ye have nothing to do with us to build an house unto our GOD; but we ourselves together will build unto the LORD GOD of Israel, as king Cyrus the king of Persia hath commanded us. 14 Now because we have maintenance from the king's palace, and it was not meet FOR us to see the king's dishonour, therefore have we sent and certified the king; 15 That search may be made in the book of the records of thy fathers: so shalt thou find in the book of the records, and know that this city is a rebellious city, and hurtful unto kings and provinces, and that they have moved sedition within the same of old time: FOR which cause was this city destroyed. 24 Then ceased the work of the house of GOD which is at Jerusalem. So it ceased unto the second year of the reign of Darius king of Persia. EZRA 5 1 Then the prophets, Haggai the prophet, and Zechariah the son of Iddo, prophesied unto the Jews that were in Judah and Jerusalem in the name of the GOD of Israel, even unto them. 2 Then rose up Zerubbabel the son of Shealtiel, and Jeshua the son of Jozadak, and began to build the house of GOD which is at Jerusalem: and with them were the prophets of GOD helping them. 5 But the eye of their GOD was upon the elders of the Jews, that they could not cause them to cease, till the matter came to Darius: and then they returned answer by letter concerning this matter. 8 Be it known unto the king, that we went into the province of Judea, to the house of the great GOD, which is builded with great stones, and timber is laid in the walls, and this work goeth fast on, and prospereth in their hands. 11 And thus they returned us answer, saying, We are the servants of the GOD of heaven and earth, and build the house that was builded these many years ago, which a great king of Israel builded and set up. 12 But after that our fathers had provoked the GOD of heaven unto wrath, he gave them into the hand of Nebuchadnezzar the king of Babylon, the Chaldean, who destroyed this house, and carried the people away into Babylon. 13 But in the first year of Cyrus the king of Babylon the same king Cyrus made a decree to build this house of GOD. 14 And the vessels also of gold and silver of the house of GOD, which Nebuchadnezzar took out of the temple that was in Jerusalem, and brought them into the temple of Babylon, those did Cyrus the king take out of the temple of Babylon, and they were delivered unto one, whose name was Sheshbazzar, whom he had made governor; 15 And said unto him, Take these vessels, go, carry them into the temple that is in Jerusalem, and let the house of GOD be builded in his place. 16 Then came the same Sheshbazzar, and laid the foundation of the house of GOD which is in Jerusalem: and since that time even until now hath it been in building, and yet it is not finished. 17 Now therefore, if it seem good to the king, let there be search made in the king's treasure house, which is there at Babylon, whether it be so, that a decree was made of Cyrus the king to build this house of GOD at Jerusalem, and let the king send his pleasure to us concerning this matter. --MORE-- |
